The personal essay is my favorite writing form. These are just a few of my essays that have been in print and online. More than 50 of my essays have been published in outlets like O, FamilyFun, The Washington Post, The Toast and Full Grown People.

Seeing Elves

Brain,Child Magazine, 2006. This essay is about the conflict between reality and fantasy when raising young children.

Throwing the Thimble

Skirt Magazine, 2004. From the hidden way-back vault! This is about playing board games with little kids. I guess you could say it goes badly sometimes.

Watch Your Back Barbie

Brain,Child Magazine, 2002. This was only the 2nd piece I ever sold and it still makes me smile because of how it captures a certain time in my kids’ lives.

In each “One Track Mind” interview, I talk to a songwriter about a song of his or her choice–anything from the inspiration and challenges of the song to its process and evolution. If you love songs and find the creation of a song as interesting as I do, you’ll enjoy these interviews. I also do the occasional album or show review.

I publish the popular local website Charlotte on the Cheap. If you take a look at the website you’ll see that I have a passion for my adopted hometown and that I know the ins and outs of the various neighborhoods, as well as the businesses and people. I also write regularly for The Charlotte Observer and CharlotteFive, and I’ve provided content for Charlotte’s tourism site, CharlottesGotALot.

I’m always happy to consider travel assignments. I’ve written about many places in the Carolinas and occasionally more distant locales.

I enjoy introducing readers to interesting people doing interesting things. Let’s talk!
