Essays
These are just a few of my essays that have been in print. More than 50 of my essays have been published in magazines like O, FamilyFun, and The Washington Post. The essay is my favorite writing form, so, if you’d like, settle in and read a few while you’re here.
Off to a Slow Start, Washington Post, 2008. All I wanted from the 5K was to not come in last.
The Best Kind of Journey, O, The Oprah Magazine, 2008. (This was called “Paradise Lost and Found” in the print edition; I called it “Losing Being Lost.”) How does using a GPS system change the travel experience? Are there aspects of travel that we have lost forever?
Weightless, O, The Oprah Magazine, 2008. In this essay I write about an experience I had at Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head, NC. One of the amazing things you can do at Jockey’s Ridge is hang glide off the huge sand dunes. And one of the amazing things about hang gliding off the huge sand dunes is that it really doesn’t matter if you’re heavy or light, short or tall.
Quiz Kid, msn.com, 2007. Do you know a kid who knows it all? Then you’ll identify with this story.
Sometimes It’s Best To Sing From the Heart, Christian Science Monitor, 2006. Why would a kid who loves being in choir never actually sing in choir? This essay tries to answer this question. But the larger question is how do we know a kid is learning? Can we trust them enough to just let them be?
Seeing Elves, Brain,Child Magazine, 2006. Brain,Child is such a great magazine for essays. You never know what you’ll read next. This essay is about the conflict between reality and fantasy when raising young children.
The Apple and the Tree, Brain,Child Magazine, 2005. This essay examines one paradox of parenting. How can people so flawed try to instill good traits in kids? Are we hypocrites or just hopeful?
Watch Your Back Barbie, Brain,Child Magazine, 2002. This was only the 2nd piece I ever sold and it still makes me smile because of how it captures a certain time in my kids’ lives.
